The CPSC adopted a new safety standard preventing dressers and other clothing storage units from tipping over. The commission voted 3-1 to adopt the ASTM 2057-23 voluntary standard to be put into law and became a mandatory standard. The effective date for the final rule is September 1, 2023. This mandatory standard is meant to protect young children from dressers tipping over and causing an injury or leading to death. Manufacturers will now be required to ensure clothing storage units are safer and in compliance with the law.
The ASTM F2057-23 standard applies to freestanding storage units, including but not limited to chests, chests of drawers, drawer chests, armoires, chifferobes, bureaus, door chests, and dressers. The following are not included: shelving units such as bookcases or entertainment furniture, office furniture, dining room furniture, jewelry armoires, underbed drawer storage units, occasional/accent furniture not intended for bedroom use, laundry storage/sorting units, or built-in units intended to be permanently attached to the building.
Your product must contain tipover restraints that are meant to be used with a clothing storage unit thst is required to be tested to the following standard: ASTM F3096 − 14
